Selective collections

Analysis of the technical and economic conditions in which selective collections can be initiated. Using data on the tonnages of waste produced within the area studied the following are calculated :

  • the tonnages of household and similar waste which are collectable selectively,
  • the collection costs for various types of material by various methods of collection.

Collection diagnostics

Aid to diagnostics and organisation of traditional and/or selective collection of waste.

  • Evaluation of capacities of containers to be installed.
  • Calculation of the appropriate frequencies.
  • Composition of collection circuits and simulation (or monitoring) of rounds.

Ordinary industrial waste

Evaluation of the volume of OIW produced by manufacturers and traders on the basis of the size and operations of the company. This is a data base created by Cabinet MERLIN.

Economics of treatment installations

Set of programs enabling provisional financial estimates to be produced for all types of waste treatment and disposal installations : waste sites, transit stations, sorting centres, incineration plants, composting units with or without methanization and technical burial centres.

The following are calculated on the basis of the characteristics of the treatment installation :

  • the total investment necessary to set up the installations,
  • the costs associated with operation and financing of the installation and disposal and/or sale of the by-products (including energy).

Recycling incomes

Set of programs for simulation of the incomes associated with waste recycling.

Material recycling :

  • simulation of Ecological Packaging incomes,
  • analysis of the impact on treatment costs of organising selective collections of the Ecological Packaging type.

Energy recovery (incineration plant) :

  • simulation of incomes from the sale of electricity to EDF (national grid) per seasonal period, based on the power generated by the Turbogenerator Set and guaranteed to EDF (with allowance for any missing kWh and purchases from EDF).
  • calculation of the incomes from sales of energy to a heating network (cogeneration).

Technical assessments of household waste incineration plants

Simulation of the technical conditions of operation of incineration plants based on the elementary composition of the waste and characteristics of the incineration plant.
Calculation or verification of :

  • the NCV of the waste,
  • the theoretical efficiency of combustion and energy recovery in the boiler,
  • the combustion gas composition at different points of the installation,
  • the characteristics of the steam produced and the saleable quantities of energy
  • the cleaning efficiency of the flue gas treatment installation,
  • the anticipated quantities of by-products.

Water/steam circuit (CIVA)

Simulation of the thermodynamic cycles potentially available to recover the energy which is contained in the waste and released when it is burned. This is the CIVA program designed by Cabinet MERLIN which calculates :

  • The instantaneous flows of steam circulating in the various installations (turbine, air cooler, heating system exchanger etc.),
  • The thermal outputs recovered or dissipated in the circuit equipment in the form of :
    • electricity produced,
    • heat supplied to a network,
    • steam supplied to an industrial user or dissipated in the condensation equipment.

This software is based on computer modelling of Mollier's diagram.

Smoke plume (APC3)

Simulation of the atmospheric dispersion of pollutants from an incinerator stack :

  • Calculation (allowing for the topography of the site) of the concentrations on the ground of various gas or solid pollutants contained in the atmospheric discharges from incinerators (Gaussian model of atmospheric dispersion).
  • Representation of the pollutant isoconcentration curves and concentration threshold exceedance curves for a defined geographical location and within a radius of 20 km, calculated instantaneously or statistically over several years.
  • Evaluation of the impact on the environment of the construction of an incinerator with flue gas treatment systems meeting the regulations or with a purification performance above that defined in the Act dated 25 January 1991.
